Marcus Valerius Martialis (better known today as Martial) was born around 40 AD and died around 104 AD. He was a Latin poet from Hispania (the Iberian Peninsula, or modern-day Spain).

Martial is best known for his twelve books of epigrams, published in Rome between AD 86 and 103, during the reigns of the emperors Domitian, Nerva and Trajan.
